Keys for the tank truck maintenance
The main function of a tank truck is to transport liquids, powders, gases, foodstuffs and dangerous goods by road. This is why it is so important to ensure the safety of the vehicle, as the type of load it carries can represent a serious road and consumer health hazard.
That is why the maintenance of tankers must be carried out correctly and thoroughly to avoid any problems and to ensure that they are always in perfect condition. The following points should be taken into account when servicing a tanker:
External inspection of the tank
First make sure that the tank has no surface damage. It should be checked for bumps, dents or cracks that could cause the contents to leak out and contaminate the environment.
Also watch out for corrosion effects. Tanks are made of metal and can corrode and rust depending on the liquid products being stored.
The tank must be very strong, so that if the truck is involved in a traffic accident, the contents are affected as little as possible.
Check for leaks
Tanks have valves, pipes and other safety features that could leak and cause problems during transport. The inspection should make sure that everything is tightly sealed so that the contents do not leak.
Cleaning and disinfection
Once the material has been unloaded from inside the tank truck, the tank must be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected, particularly if hazardous liquids or gases are being transported.
This cleaning is so important because if we load the vehicle with a different material and there are remains of the previous material, a dangerous reaction could occur with serious consequences in the event that they are incompatible materials.
Degassing and tank depressurisation
In the case of tankers transporting gases in their various forms, the tank must also be degassed and depressurized, even if it is already empty. Any remaining residual gas and pressure must be removed to prevent irreparable damage.
Basic maintenance
Finally, the maintenance of tankers must take into account the normal inspections of any industrial vehicle. We are referring to the typical preventive checks such as checking the brakes, the ABS system, suspension, steering, lights…
