The main types of semitrailers that exist
There are currently different types of transport vehicles on the market, some of them operating as semi-trailers, and their use is increasingly booming thanks to the practicality and advantages they offer to small and large companies.
Types of semi-trailers: container carriers, tautliners, refrigerators and special vehicles
The semi-trailer, by definition, is designed to be coupled to another vehicle, although it is an independent structure without a front axle. Moreover, in most cases, usefulness is eminently practical. Regular preventive maintenance is particularly important because of its special characteristics and cost. Here is the list of the main types of semitrailers that we will find:
Container carriers
The container carrier, as its name implies, is a vehicle designed to carry approved sea containers. It usually makes the journey from the factory or polygon to the port, railway station or airport, and vice versa. They will be loaded and unloaded by crane. Of course, the sizes of the container will vary depending on the measures of the container, so the variety we can find is big.
Tautliners
Tautliners are semi-trailers that have the particularity of lacking solid side walls and ceiling. A canvas that can be moved is used, so that it is easier to insert and remove the load. It is usually used for pallets or solid materials that would otherwise be more difficult to extract. It began to be used in the 1960s and today is one of the preferred options.
Refrigerators
The refrigerated semi-trailer has two characteristics that differentiate it from other vehicles in its class. First, that its walls are insulating, with the aim of maintaining the indoor temperature. The second aspect to note is that they have a cooling system independent of the vehicle to which they are coupled. This vehicle is usually used for the transport of food, chemicals or medicines.
Special vehicles
There are other types of vehicles that will fall into the category of what we consider semi-trailers. Wood semi-trailers, usually logs, have no covered roof, as the goods are placed and removed with a crane. Another case is that of tilting vehicles, with a platform that allows the materials to be overturned and is used, above all, for the management of aggregates.
A special vehicle is any transport designed specifically for a particular application and therefore has unique characteristics that do not resemble any other category. Among the types of special vehicles used worldwide we see, for example, semitrailers intended for the transport of windmills, whose specifications are designed to provide easier loading and unloading of the material without the need for cranes.
Tank semi-trailers
Normally used for the transport of bulk products, agricultural products or for transporting fuels or chemicals, they consist of a tank for handling liquid substances. These tank semitrailers have highly insulated and reinforced tanks to prevent leaks or contamination during the transport of the cargo. In addition, there are also different materials depending on the standards applied to each type of food in order to avoid corrosions or chemical reactions.
The different types of semitrailers have specificities and it is good to keep them in good condition and, above all, repair them quickly if there are problems. To do this, it is essential to know how each semitrailer works, its approvals and needs. At Consman we specialize in maintenance and repair services for commercial vehicles.
