Discover the different types of trucks according to their goods
Maritime and air transport are very important in the context of global trade in recent decades. However, land transport is still crucial for all kinds of products and goods to reach their destination. In overland transport, the truck has always been the most widely used vehicle for transporting goods of all kinds. Over the years, the design of the truck has been adapted to the characteristics and needs of each type of goods in order to transport them in perfect condition to their destination.
In this article we would like to make a detailed classification of the types of trucks according to the goods they transport, as there are several types and each one serves a specific purpose. We will also indicate in which sectors each type of truck is most common.
Open container truck
The load is completely or partially uncovered. Normally, this type of truck is used in the construction industry as it is particularly suitable for transporting large and heavy goods.
Closed container truck
Here, the cargo is totally enclosed and can only be accessed through the rear door. This type of truck can usually be seen in cities and urban areas, as they usually carry small or easy to transport loads such as parcels, removals, etc.
Tautliner truck
They can also be called «curtain-sided» because the sides and roof of the truck have a sliding tarpaulin that facilitates access to the goods for both loading and unloading. Due to this accessibility, this type of truck is very versatile, as it is used for all types of goods that do not require special care.
Dump truck
This truck has a collecting box called a hopper which is designed to be able to unload and tip the load backwards thanks to its mechanisms. In general, it is used to transport bulk products. We can see this type of truck in the agricultural sector for transporting grain as well as in the construction sector for carrying ground, sand, gravel and similar materials.
Tank truck
These trucks are equipped with a cylindrical tank for storing liquid, gaseous and chemical products. Due to the potentially dangerous nature of the goods, these vehicles have very strict safety systems to minimise the risk of an accident as much as possible. In this blog article on the maintenance of tank trucks, we have already given a good overview of how to take care of these vehicles to reduce the danger.
Refrigerated truck
They are essential for the food industry. The products are fully insulated inside the truck to keep the food refrigerated and prevent them from spoiling during transport. There are refrigerated trucks that emit cold to keep frozen products well preserved and there are others that simply isolate the temperature from the outside to keep the inside cool.
Car transporter truck
A vehicle specifically designed for the transport of other vehicles. It is usually a very elongated truck carrying cars, motorbikes or even other trucks in more extreme cases. It can be open or closed.
Cage truck
Truck suitable for transporting live animals such as pigs, cows and sheep. It is widely used in rural areas where the livestock sector is important. On the sides of the truck there are openings that allow air to enter for the animals.
Other types of trucks
In addition to the types of trucks mentioned above, there are also other types of trucks such as stake trucks, rubbish trucks designed to collect waste from cities, fire trucks designed to extinguish fires, armoured trucks for banks and money transport, concrete mixer trucks for making concrete on a construction site…
